You need to put the chain on first. SRAM has set videos online, I’d consult one of those.

  2. Loosen the cable and adjust the limit screw. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, google it.

  3. In both of your pictures the limit screws are turned in almost completely. You want to turn out the two hex bolts that are next to each other. You may have unscrewed the b-screw instead

There’s only so often I feel like I’m not the most hopeless DIY mechanic in the world. This is one of those times.

This is assuming your shifter has a barrel adjuster. When this happens I start over again. Unscrew the limiting screws to neutral. Release the cable. Tighten the barrel adjuster all the way, then loosen a turn or to. Make sure there is no slack in the cable anywhere, I like to use a pair if needle-nosed pliers to make sure the cable is tight, some like those third hand doohickeys, but they don’t work on all application pliers do. Tighten the cable and then use the barrel adjuster to make most of the major adjustments.

First of all – I’m really impressed that everyone missed the obvious – the cable is not routed properly. Just look at the manual and suddenly things will clear up. And second – the derailleur is bent from the factory, it has to be.

Modern SRAM and Shimano are no where close to compatible. Especially on 12 speed where your tolerance indexing is going to be extremely narrow. Get a Shimano cassette or a SRAM derailleur. Also, unless it’s from your finger in the first pic, that cage is definitely bent.

Place your hand on the inside of the cage and gently pull it outward. My bet is the pulley will line up fine (or even over extend past the smallest gear).

Derailleurs need a chain on them to line up right.
