Mirracycle mirror and extra Cygolite Hypershot mounted on 50mm handlebar extender on traffic side. Sometimes I also mount my cameras on this. I think this is the ideal location for such safety accessories.

Does not read as a road user, does not comply with roadway usage.
Will be ignored and misinterpreted.
Keep it to one tail light, steady burning, mounted on seat post or rear rack area.
Defensive riding would serve you better.

Do what you need to do within the law to feel safe out there. The only places in the whole world where you can bike commute and both law and culture favor and protect you are in the Netherlands and Denmark. For everywhere else, people should feel free to equip themselves as desired for their physical and legal protection.
