James O’Brien reacts to Reform’s local election gains and argues that British politics is repeating the ‘same populist cycle’ seen during Brexit and Boris Johnson’s time in office.

It comes as Keir Starmer says he is “hurt” but is “not going to walk away” after Labour lost hundreds of councillor seats, along with control of eight councils, in the local elections.

With more than 40 of the 136 council results in, the party appears to be losing grip of its historic heartlands with major losses in Tameside, Hartlepool and Wigan, as pollsters predict more than 1,500 Labour council seats could be lost.

Meanwhile, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party has seen a surge in support, winning more than 300 seats, and the Green Party has won the Hackney mayoral election, ousting Labour.

  1. According to Kellner, Reform have gone down in their vote share across the UK from 33% last year to 27% this year. It is the Greens who are in the ascendency but have been hamstrung by the first-past-the-post system

  2. We have shot ourselves in one foot with regard to Brexit then the other one when Boris was elected and now the gun is pointed to the head. I've given up on the so called great British public so maybe it's time to give them a dose of that conman and grifter Farage. I probably won't be around thank heaven. The great British voting public are malleable and pretty ignorant and will get what they deserve. One thing you failed to mention James was, it's not a fair fight when over 90% of ALL the media are anti Labour. Even the Mirror is leaning towards Polanski's Greens and far left Labour. This Government is doing a decent job considering the slurry the Cons left behind but will never get any credit for anything. The BBC being evenhanded is a joke and so are most of their reporters. You're fighting a losing battle against that snake Farage but thank you for trying unlike your colleague, Ferrari.

  3. Not that it's news – but the English really do have something wrong with them.

Eventually, they'll move so far to the right that they'll break the UK apart.

  4. When it comes corporate Politics and Commercial profits there is no real freedom and there shall always be one winner and that's the Banking System of Debt based Money. If Nigel Farage thinks he is going to bring about change, then take a look at Liz Truss and how the establishment of Banking and Corporate finance put a stop to her plans. The Bank Of England being the Creditors they will have the final say and what they say goes. The one who supplies the Money is the one who controls how a economy runs. The Politicians are servant to the lender. So as for REFORM they will be subservient to the lender just like all previous Governments past and present.

  5. How many taxpayer £Trillions were given away to Brussels by Cameron & Clegg, and the Labour Cronies Blair & Brown from GB Taxpayer back pockets…??
Sideliners Clegg, Miliband, Kinnock and Theresa May in on the Betrayal too…

  6. I tried helping campaign for labour at this election. People dont want to even hear evidence or logic anymore. They feel more attached to whatever conspiracy theory their bullshitting device is feeding their lizard brains that particular minute. It was like talking to a brick wall "Ooo Im not a fan of Keir starmer. He shold resign because of Winter Fuek, "Oh yes but we reversed that and you got your winter fuel"…"Yeah well i still dont like hjim. hes a politician. They are all the same you cant trust politicians. (Knowing they are on the elecotral register) "Right so who will you be voting for" "Oh i dont really know. Maybe an independent or something. Probably reform. They Arent really politicians"

  7. USA, Britain and Australia are all following the far right populist wave and who controls the media in all 3, that’s right Murdoch media.

  8. On the comment regarding "once they know , they'll understand" (para), after watching (too many) clips of interviews of trump supports and hearing them say that they are not aware of this or that, that they only watch FOX or X for their "news", I have to wonder how informed the majority of the US population actually is. Even thought some of their "news" content is syndicated, their free to air media out lets seem to be largely regional. Other "news" or information services are cable subscriptions or YT based platforms.
Americans seem to be very selective about their choice of information provider. Even seeing the Jubilee series shows a lack of broad information searching to prepare for the event or a lack of understanding of the complex topics discussed while still holding really committed opinions.
I dunno, it's just an observation.

  9. Open your eyes and look at James. LOL The man has aged 15 years since Trump got in power and now Farage is cleaning up it's only going to accelerate. He spends his day in one of those bubbles similar to the one Starmer has and thinks people actually believes all the nonsense he spurts out. It if wasn't for the paid bots in his comment section it would be a wipe out like the recent election results.

  10. i love it i love drinking this mans tears mmmh keep gining mhu, this man upset and even more upset! i gain power from how much he hates where he is, and hates the people around him and the buildings falls about him as he sits there in his US backed LBC bunker as the last tower falls he and he and his last radio host bites down on there last get out of town bill!

  11. “If you don’t like it, move to another country.” Leaving Britain was my best move ever. I’m sorry to say, there’s no end in sight to this stupidity.
