Hi all,

I'm cycling from Zurich to Tbilisi. Right now i'm doing my restday in Innsbruck and i have to be in Ljubljana om the 19th for my 30 birthday:). My plan for the route ist doing de Grossglockner, the Passo del Cason di Lanza and maybe one half of slovenia's west loop.

I'm not sure if the Grossglockner is a bit much, are there good.alternatives nearby? I heard only the Brennerpaas is rideable now. What are some things i can't miss on the way to Lubljana?

  1. You could do a bit of a detour at Jesenice to the Bled lake and circle round it. Just add Velika Zaka to the route.

  2. I think for adding the parts of the Slovenia West Loop you have multiple options:

    – From Tarvisio take the “Save” bike path (make sure to have the small detour to Laghi di Fusine) to Krajnska Gora (old railway route, really easy and fast), then you could take the north eastern part of the loop to Ljubljana.

    – From Kranskja Gora you can follow the West Loop up Visic Pass through Soca Valley and then to Ljubljana (stunning views + Soca is great, but longer and more demanding).

    – Or from Tarvisio take the Ciclovia Alpe Adria to about Udine and from there to Nova Gorizia and ride the southern east part of the west loop. Ciclovia Alpe Adria is a really nice cycle path for at least the first part, you can ride it really fast as it descends and is mostly tarmac.. So you get a bit of Italy as well and if you want you could also pass the sea around Trieste.

As a side note: Never done Grossglocknerhochalpenstrasse by bike, but it is stunning and for sure worth it if you can do it (spectacular which Brenner is for sure not!).
