It does not slide as well, so it might be harsher. I do not know how much of an impact that has.

  2. It’s a helmet with a hat over it, why would it not be safe if there’s still a helmet underneath the hat?

Yes, the only risk is that it block part of your vision or that he break during a crash and small bits gets in your eyes. I would say go on !

I believe that is a horse riding helmet. Sure if you like the looks it’s safer then riding a horse. Real cycling helmets may not loot that cool, but will keep your head cooler since they have holes to let air in. For a child it does not matter. For a cyclist it does. Fashion is important for children even more so. If they like one helmet more, let them use that one. They will like riding more 🙂

    Maybe.

Note that standards compliance in and of itself isn’t the same thing as safety.

I wouldn’t worry about it. There’s also dabrim which adds sun protection to a helmet.

I used too see a woman with a hat like that regularly at the bike rack near my work.
It looked funny to me because it hid the helmet so well that she appeared to have a giant head. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Personally I feel like if the ridge hit the ground it would put a massive moment through the riders neck rather than slide like a traditional helmet does

Yes, it’s safe. The cover is not rigidly attached to the helmet and will pull off with very little force in the event of a sliding crash. It’s lovely for keeping the sun off your face. It’s not floppy in the wind, either, which surprised me.

    Get one!

The only danger I see with the styling in the photos is if she is going too fast and the brim of the hat folds down over her eyes because she’s going too fast.

Sure. Looks like a good idea.

Also, skin cancer kills way, way, way more people than bike crashes so it is doubly safe.

I don’t see a reason where a the hat would be an issue outside of it catching air under the brim. The shell of the helmet is still the thing bearing the brunt of the impact, but th hat would just crush.

Looks like it’d be a right pain in the arse at any speed or any light breeze.

  14. Honestly it’s probably safer. I’m sure studies show drivers are more careful around cyclists without helmets.

Yes,, but i doubt it’s going to be a profitable seller. If someone is so concerned about how they look on a bike that they have to hide their helmet, than they’re likely not going to wear a helmet at all.

  16. It’s fine. Everyone in this thread that thinks it’s going to catch and cause neck injury in a fall has perhaps never touched a straw hat. It’s not a *kettle helm,* it’s not glued on, it will crumple and/or pop right off in the event of a fall.

You’re all good. Interestingly, for race speeds, you can’t even put stickers on helmets because the change in surface composition can compromise impact resistance. I’d imagine you’re not tryna go fast with this thing though so you’re prolly fine 🙂
