After watching this video of people jumping down flights of stairs with their Bromptons, it got me thinking. Small wheels are much stronger than big wheels, why couldn't we add BMX pegs to our bromptons and then carry a standing passenger at low speeds? I think the bike could potentially still fold if the pegs are foldable. Any thoughts or other potential solutions? I would love to add capability to my Brompton and would even be willing to take them on and off for special passenger occasions.

Hoping it could be safe at low speeds and not mess with the sturmy archer IGH

P.S. I have a 2017 M6L with switch kit

Check out maximum load of bike and max load of tires.

I was a bit surprised myself, seeing that the Conti Urban foldable tires only have a maximum load capacity of a bit over 70kg.

… not to speak of not being able to fold the bike any longer with pegs, except you plan to transport only one legged featherweight pirate passengers.

wheels strong, frame weak. i wouldn’t do it but hey if you ever do something stupid make sure to film it for the memes.

It is not recommended by the manufacturer. Likely to break the bike, and cause injury.

  4. The hinge is rated for 110kg. There’s probably a bit of a buffer in that, but I wouldn’t count on it. So, probably not a good idea to have two people on a Brompton.

Anecdotally, a friend of mine told me he broke his Brompton’s hinge by riding with his kid. Don’t know details though, like how much he and the kid weighed.
