    1) Someone needed your quick release (kinda doubt)

    2) Someone is being an a$$

    3) Someone tried to steal your bike but someone saw him and he bounced. Btw how was the bike secured? Through the front wheel?

    4) Someone tried to steal your front wheel but couldn’t get it out.

  2. Either someone needed a quick release or they tried to steal your wheel and couldn’t figure out how to get it fully apart.

  3. They stole your skewer. They took the wheel off so you wouldn’t ride off and have an accident. That’s because they are nice thieves.

Could be kids hoping you’ll ride off and not notice while they sit and wait ready to film the crash for TikTok likes.

    Kids are dumb.

Get some of those skewers that need an Allen key wrench to remove them. Takes the casual messers out of the look that way.

The purpose of this theft, similar to stealing a seat, is to immobilize your bike so they can come back later with bolt cutters and steal it completely.

  6. it’s super concerning you did not realize the piece that holds your wheel on the bike is missing but yes someone thought they could just steal your frame and rear wheel if they took your front wheel quick release off

In middle of action probably got scared off. Gives you picture of who it was.

My first instinct was someone “earmarked” your bike.
If you don’t come back and fix it, they will then steal it the next night as they can be pretty sure you don’t care too much about that bike.

  9. Dental insurance.. somebody wants you to crash it seems like the logic behind it

  10. My friend and I were riding around late one night in the sketchy part of Vancouver, and we decided to have a beer at a pub. He only had a U-lock, and didn’t want to leave his rear wheel vulnerable, so he removed it and locked it to the rack with the frame and front wheel. That should be enough, right??

We came back after about 30 minutes to find that someone stole his quick release spindle only, out of spite it seems?

Addicts will take anything that isn’t bolted down, and often even things that are!

Someone either needed a quick release and stole yours, or they’re immobilizing your bike so you leave it on the rack and they can come back with tools and steal your whole bike.

…or just make sure that they are clamped down so hard that it takes a lot of strength to undo. This will ensure they do not come lose during ride and that a possible thief will move on. They should be tight to the wheel when locked. So that nothing can get between the frame and the locked quick release arm.

I wonder if it’s to keep the bike there so they can come back and steal it.

Without the front skewer, you won’t want to ride that anywhere. It forces you to keep the bike in the rack longer – possibly overnight – and they can come back and take it.

Similar to how thieves will add a second lock to your bike. Then they’ll come back at night with a battery angle grinder and cut your lock off to steal the bike.

Well, at least now you can replace the skewers with tamper resistant ones.
