The final day of cycling King Alfred’s Way, a Cycling UK created, mostly off-road, route in a 220 mile loop from Winchester.

Setting off from the campsite after 09:00 I didn’t have to ride for long before I climbed onto the South Downs to head westwards.

I had planned this to be a shorter day as I knew the South Down would be a challenge for me to do at any speed. And I was correct.

Lots of up and down, with the ups being very sharp gradients, meant that I made very slow progress.

But eventually I arrived back in Winchester and caught train back to London.

It’s a good route with plenty of challenges. I enjoyed it.

36 miles ridden, 3,658 ft climbed
