It's often debated about whether Lyon or Marseille is the second city. Lyon was always considered the second city in the 1980's but since French Government reform the Marseille- Aix en Provence Metropole is bigger in area. Lyon spreads a wider net of influence though over to Geneve, Grenoble in the East, Valence in the South, St Ettienne to the East and Macon and the Edge of Bourgone to the north. You only have to look at the fact Lyon is served by THREE Ter (Train Express Regional) networks its own AURA, ZOU connecting it with Avignon and Marseille and MobiGo to Dijon and Paris Bercy. It's quite feasible to visit Lyon from Paris and vv with regular and affordable TGV inOui and OuiGo TGV trains. Or take the gentle service on the MobiGo it takes 5 hours rather than 2 though. But if you're heading from Paris south why not stop in Lyon on route.
Other than Lyon, think about the French Riviera too. Take railway lines from Gare de Lyon to the east and south connecting Lyon, the French Riviera, and Central Europe.

The official Metropolitan Lyon territory is 1.4 millions. Of course, you can extend the real statistical metropolitan area, with all close big suburbs… But 2.2 million is different: "aire urbaine", which count all towns where at least 40% work in the central urban area, here the Metropolitan area. … SO that 2.2 million looks at the regional influence of a city on the surrounding workforce. … It reaches FAR beyond the red area shown in this video, which is the 1.4 or more Metro area. Be cause nowadays, many people drive 1H or 2 on the highway to get to work, so they can live more than 100km away…
Good info. September 2023 my wife and I spent a week and a half in Lyon. Absolutely loved it. Great city excellent food. Saw all the Roman ruins. Quite impressive.

Marseille might have more people, but Lyon is much more interesting, districts have more character and the old town is picturesque. Lyon botanical garden is one of the oldest and the town itself has lots of greenery, small parks between apartment blocks, well kept and you can get anywhere using public transport (bus, tram, trolley, metro and even funicular). One downside is the transportation lines that go south to Italy and Spain are adding traffic, the ring roads have heavy traffic during rush hour.

Yeah, Lyon is cool. I taught English in the Saint-Etienne area, which is nearby.
