The forgotten Cross Gates–Wetherby line once connected Cross Gates to Wetherby, providing a vital passenger railway route serving communities east of Leeds.
Opened in 1876 by the North Eastern Railway, this railway line supported travel, commuting, and local village transport for decades. The route later included Penda’s Way railway station, built in 1939 to serve expanding suburban housing.
Like many rural and suburban railway routes across Britain, the line closed to passengers in 1964 following national railway restructuring. The track was later removed, leaving behind abandoned infrastructure, lost station sites, railway embankments, and sections now used as walking and cycling routes.
Today, the Cross Gates to Wetherby railway remains one of West Yorkshire’s most fascinating lost railways, attracting railway historians, urban explorers, and local history enthusiasts searching for traces of Leeds’ hidden transport past.

It truly is a line that keeps giving and plenty more to come.
It's quite sad that such brilliant structures are left to sadly decay as nothing today would be built to the same quality.
The tall grey sign post shown at 10mins could have been to hold a sign warning of a low bridge?
Thanks Pete for the explore.
Nice explore this Pete !
