I was trying to fix an issue:
Chain falls of large chain ring in BIG front chainring, SMALL cassette cog. Noticed there may have been a slightly bent tooth in my chainring. Tried to fix the sucker with a wrench and broke it off.
I'm not sure if the issue was actually the tooth or not… But now I'm missing a tooth in the chainring and of course the chain is still falling off when pedaling backwards in this position.
So I have 2 questions:
-
Was the initial issue likely to be a bent tooth in the chainring? Something else?
-
Should I look into buying a new chainring or is this probably fine for a while?
Thanks in advance!
Bike is a Giant contend SR2 With original tiagra set. It's a 2x front chainring.
Broke a tooth trying to fix chain falling off. Do I need a new chainring?

You need a new chain ring. Not safe. Sorry to say, it was likely not bent at all. Teeth are intentionally not uniform on these.
I’d buy a new chainring, then adjust both derailleurs.
Hey if the chain falls of when you pedal backwards… Stop pedaling backwards! It’s not meant to work like that. Yes you need a new chainring. Don’t ever try to bend drive train parts, or any parts for that matter.
Now I know why the chain slips from my mouth.
Uh… YEAAH! And i don’t even wanna KNOW how you broke THAT tooth
Your chain lines gotta be off. Everything is bone stock right? You didn’t change any spacers, hubs, cranksets, etc?
You already set the cable tension while in your highest speed gear? Then tinkered with the limit screws?
Chainrings are not that expensive. The chain likely falls off the ring due to the ring being worn… you need to replace the chainring anyway likely
