One of the nicest routes I know from where I live – Haarlem, just 20km East of Amsterdam – is a 100km+ loop that takes you through dunes, forests and farmlands. It still blows my mind that 98% of this route is entirely car-free. Look, it's not the Dolomites, in terms of breathtaking landscapes or anything; but it's just full of beautiful nature, cute villages, dikes, windmills, flower fields and the occasional baby wild horse. Cross the North Sea Canal via the IJmuiden locks (an engineering marvel in itself) and back via the (free) ferry. Such a pleasure.

Agree! Compared to the pictures of beautiful gravel routes I see here it’s nothing, but for people who live here in the flat country it’s a great opportunity to escape from all the traffic. I love the dunes myself as they have some elevation. I haven’t rode this particular route yet (I only recently started) but I think I would just turn around once I reached Bergen and ride the same way back. I just really love the cycle paths in the dunes. But will give this one a go at some point. Thanks for the suggestion!

Nice ride. I remember the red brick tracks from the LF kustroute.
