I'm fixing up an old Trek 1500 which I got after someone had tried to swipe it so when I picked it up the back wheel was hanging off the drop outs. I am assuming this is the original wheel 126 mm freewheel hub (which took a day to soaking in PB to remove) I took it apart/regreased and re assembled it's not dropping back into frame like I am used to with other QR wheels/frames I have used. What am I doing wrong here?

What is that washer between the lock nuts? I haven’t seen one like that before. May be that’s what is taking the space?

If it is the same wheel then you just need to force the frame apart a bit. I often need to do this to cargo bikes and fat bikes. It may have not been the original wheel in this case, but it should be fine.

Also, hub widths have changed over the years, from 126mm wide to 145mm. So, could just be a mismatch. And with steel frames, fine to stretch it wide enough to fit.

Spread the frame apart, it will be fine. I assume you have the right QR sqewer?

It’s either mismatched parts or the frame is bent. Measure the frame between the rear dropouts and see what it measures out at. Most likely answer is 130mm for an older road bike. That wider range freewheel has me suspecting that may be a 135 MTB hub.
