I actually just copied a meme I posted in BCJ.

Playing both sides so I always come out on top.

Yeah except i feel like more than half these retromod builds cost as much as a normal new bike and the people that buy it use it to ride to a coffee shop, where da meme bout that

  3. I’ll remember this next time I’m riding the bikes I overpaid for en route to the local pizza/beer place!

  4. building an xbike these days requires extraordinary amounts of at least 2 of the following: bike knowledge, patience, money

i have parts that cost me at elast 2 times more than the bike has

Nothing like making a meme directed at a group to let them know you think about them a lot but somehow don’t care about them.

There are places for both cheap and expensive X-Bikes. Yes I could buy a bike for the $1.2k I put into a build. To get an equivalent new bike I would probably need to pay $2-4k for a custom frame builder to make a high-end steel frame.

Xbikers certainly overpay for bikes, but I would argue that they aren’t overpaying nearly as much as the strava bros. In my wildest dreams, I’ve never thought up a bike that cost more than $4k new (and I never buy shit new if I can avoid it). $4k is nothing for a new carbon road bike to a lot of people these days. And those bikes will be obsolete in like 5 years. Blinged out Paul brake calipers will probably outlast anything on a new road bike by a factor of 2 or 3. I would much rather be overpaying for a bike part that will last the rest of my life than buying disposable resin crap and e-waste.

thinking about a group enough to post a meme saying you don’t think about the group is… Interesting

It goes a couple ways. People buying old bikes and rocking them, people buying old bikes and tossing tons of new expensive parts on them, people buying new bikes that aren’t carbon and are adventure oriented, people buying new bikes that are carbon, are adventure oriented, and they toss a ton of expansive parts on them, really weird random bikes.

We both overpay on bikes. One on the carbon bike, one on overpriced hipster bikeparts. We are not that different. Just the pace.

Whichever post, the xbiking or BJC version, gets the most comments will officially be the group that thinks more about the other.

Kinda feel like this meme is reversed. No carbon brochacho is giving my Bridgestone a second glance, and I’m fine with that. Just want more people riding bikes of any kind.

Every time this meme comes up I HAVE to point out that, in Mad Men, this wasn’t a “badass” line. It was Don being insecure and LYING because he was extremely threatened by Ginsberg and, in fact, thought about him a LOT

  15. I dunno, I feel like some of the builds on this sub could fit in the first category.

Top panel should be modern performance bike designers/engineers. Leave the bottom panel as it is

I have spent far more on my piece of shit bike than I would have if I had bought a new one and it doesn’t even look cool. It is exactly how I want it though, except I want my saddle further back and I am at the limits of what I can find.

Do they make layback seatposts anymore? They used to do them for BMX when I was a kid…
