hey all, hoping this is the right place for this

I have this old steel frame bike that I’d like to restore and use. Problem is I have no idea how to find out what will fit or work on frame.

I would like to modernise everything and keep the cool look of the steel frame. Gear shifter on the handle bars, brakes that are safe to use. I’d like to do it all myself. Big questions. what kind of crankset do I have? (English, French, Italian). What kind of wheels and brakes will fit?

One option is just new brakes and wheel and chain and it becomes a single speed. I don’t mind that but would like some gears

Attached are some pictures of the bike and measurements I was able to take hopefully they’re helpful

  1. It’s almost certainly going to have a regular 68mm BSA bottom bracket. I think I used to have this frame, actually, it’s nothing much special, a cheap import from the early 90s or so.

First and foremost make sure it actually fits you. This is a very small size. It’s a little weird that you’ve measured every length of the frame except for the one that matters, which is the seat tube.

Everything is going to be standard. The frame is spaced for a 5 or 6 speed rear wheel, but you can cold set it (bend it) wider. Mild steel doesn’t mind that kind of treatment. A modern derailleur will need a derailleur hanger. Few modern brakes are long reach enough for a frame with clearances this massive, but they do exist. Something like the old weinmann 750 single pivots are fine if you’ve got decent brake pads.
