My shoes (five ten) came with a thin metal plate to mount behind the cleat for eggbeaters.
That cleat looks knackered but if it still clips in and out as expected just roll with it.

Crankbros cleats are made of brass I believe which is much softer than the Steel cleats that Shimano use. So they wear out far quicker than other systems. Apparently, it’s like a derailluer hanger, where it’s designed to protect the pedals themselves from wearing down, and you can replace the cheap cleats rather than the whole pedal.

But anyway. You know when to replace them because they no longer have a crisp engagement, and they are unclipping accidentally. They will also wear down much quicker if you end up doing a decent amount of hike-a-bike.

I try and just replace mine every year. It’s only $30.

Are they holding well or popping out easily? They are well worn so it wouldn’t hurt to change them now. A new pair will hold a bit tighter so remember that when you first change them.
Don’t worry about the pedal digging into the shoe, it happens and won’t affect much.

Crankbros cleats wear out fast. You can buy them cheaply on aliexpress.

Shimano cleats last orders of magnitude longer. worth considering next time you are buying pedals.

You should use the shim plate that came with the pedals to protect the shoe material. You replace cleats when the release seems less precise than you want. As the cleat wears, the range of motion prior to release increases. Ultimately, a worn out cleat could fail to release.

When the cleats look like that you buy new shoes, and a new bike. 😁

Yours look pretty worn. When they stop releasing …..smoothly ….. Also rough edges will tear up the pedal, so it’s best to replace them before they degrade the pedal . On every new ‘clipless’ pedals I get I order 3 sets of shoe cleats , and just have them on hand . I have a drawer with about 6 extra pair on hand any any time . Remember….. Cleats are cheaper thn pedals.
