If it still works, cool. But you should at least replace the housing there, cause it’ll only get worse.

There’s no way this didn’t dramatically affect shifting. And, what is going on with the chain being where it is?

The wires you see sticking out are likely part of the housing, which is reinforced with steel so that it won’t squish under the cable tension. They are supposed to be bound up under the black sheath and the little endcap should have a hole just big enough for the cable to pass through on the end, not look like a miniature can open at both ends.. The housing might just be a short 1 foot section from there to the next point, and perhaps only that segment needs to be replaced. If the cable isn’t frayed or rusted (easy to inspect once the housing is removed) you might just need that segment of housing. But once that’s off, you have a good opportunity to replace the cable or other housing segments if they look like they need it. And then wipe the cable with a bit of lube while you have it exposed.

My concern is if this the state of the cable what is the state of the rest of the drivechain.
What’s the cassette like, the front chain rings, the chain itself.

Pull the cable. Snip the housing. New fresh ferrule. Feed the cable through again. Good to go. If you don’t have housing cutter an ferrule, bike shop time.

You might be able to get away with just trimming the broken bits and replace the housing end. The housing will be ever so slightly shorter but that works (providing it was long enough to start with… obviously).
I did that on my bike, no issue. If that happens again i ll have to replace the housing as i no longer have enough length though.

You may get away with just changing the gear cable. Maybe a housing end piece. Stay safe and have fun!
