An electric bike riding in the wrong lane had a head-on collision with me and demolished my daily rider of 19 years. Over 25k miles together.
I’m nostalgic and can’t let go, especially because Surly doesn’t make the Cross-Check anymore.
How does one find a frame welder? What are my next steps? I’m assuming I need to dismantle the bike in order to send it somewhere, but what comes after that?

Shes done for bud 🫤 sorry for ur loss
New bike time. Sorry for your loss.
r/framebuilding
But it will be much cheaper and simpler to find a used Cross Check in your size. You would need to replace at least two frame tubes.
She’s dead Jim.
Sorry, but there’s no reasonable way to fix that. Only the rear triangle is salvageable, and it’s gonna cost and arm and a leg to fix. Used frame or complete bike is definitely gonna be cheaper. Hell a new surly complete bike (straggler is the disc version, with basically the same geo) is gonna be cheaper than fixing this. Probably anyway.
Sorry but it is time for a new one.
I’m far from an expert in this area, but I have a feeling this frame has ridden its final ride. I think the crack in the top tube is probably something that can be fixed, but it’s the down tube that worries me.
That sucks. I’d find a used frame and move my parts over. Hang this on the wall or make a stool from it. She’ll never be right again.
I hate to say it, but I think the best move is to look for another Cross-Check frame out in the wilds of the internets. I understand the love, so I am sorry for the pain.
It’s time…

One must find a new frame. I’m sorry as well, but you could find a frame set and transfer parts. Don’t use that fork, and possibly headset either. That is a massive impact that compromises the entire frame.
I’ve had Marino bikes make me a frame couple years ago. It went well, and they could make you [pretty much an exact copy](https://www.marinobike.com/product/custom-gravel-fixed-cyclocross-frame/) of your cross check.
Harry Potter would struggle to fix that , sorry
I’m sorry this happened to you. This is the second time an ebike heaidng in the wrong direction took out a cyclist this week that i heard.
The good news is you get to go bicycle shopping!
Ebike rider owes you a new frame
Now this is proper aero
While technically repairable, the only things salvageable is the rear end. Just get a new bike.
Could make it into a Unicycle? Probably about the only way to salvage this. Sorry lad
I just picked up a Preamble for less than $400 delivered. Building it up for my kid.
New frame.
Frame repair?? That thing is a wrap. Hang it up and memorialize it or something but do not ride that again
It would be much easier to find a used frame or bike than to try to repair that.
If you’re nostalgic you can hang it in your house or workshop or something
Tis but a scratch
Take it to a decent bike shop and ask them . They can either do it or give you the name of someone who can
Use a hack saw and turn the logo piece of the frame into a plunger handle
that is now Wall art
RIP trucker
Terrible end, but she deserves a spot on the wall.
Time for a new frame.
Dont fix it, will still be a dangerous ride forever . The steel way too badly bent.
I just went from “Oh that little bent could be fi- ooooh! Nah, that frame’s a goner!”
If You love that bike, try to source the same or simialr frame and rebuilt it on that, elsewise, man, that crack is bad.
Step 1. Go to lbs
Step 2. Buy cool new bike you can’t really afford
Step 3. By happy!
I understand the sentimentality. But have seen frames repurposed to great effect. Rear triangles used to make wall lights, down tubes to make door handles etc etc. it’s time for the bike to live a new purpose.
NBD
That sucks! It’s possible to do, I’d start by finding a frame builder in your area and see what they say. It’s likely going to cost you a lot to fix though.
It’s hard to let go of a bike that means so much to you, but I’d say mourn the loss of your bike, then start looking for a new bike that you can go on adventures with!
the only reasonable option is to get a used one as a replacement and place this on the wall.
I know it’s sentimental, but it’s also just a bike. let it go and move on
no chance bud. Even if you did have unlimited money to throw at this thing and found a framebuilder willing to take it on, it’s not even going to be the same bike afterwards. there’s absolutely no point.
[https://blackmtncycles.com/shop/monstercross/monstercross-v61-frameset/](https://blackmtncycles.com/shop/monstercross/monstercross-v61-frameset/) honestly the sale price for trhese is really good, this is what id be looking at if you wante to keep the same ride
If it was lugged…, maaaaaaybe, but that frame is toast
It’s toast. Stick a fork in it. It’s over etc lucky for you surly crosschecks come up regularly for sale used. I other words, it’s not a rare bike so u should be able to find one your size
Does Surley warranty frames?
I would find a used frame with crappy parts or a frame only, and build it up.
The frame is just another part.
I was quoted roughly 4-500 for a seat tube replacement on a bike from a local frame builder, which I didn’t go through with. I’d suspect maybe roughly double that as a starting point.
