I'm a newer bike commuter, I mostly work from home but I am needed at the office more (4-5 miles each way depending on route) so I've taken my bike or done a multi modal thing where I ride the bus to work, get an ebike share home. As I've gotten more fit on hills, the way home is becoming more fun. I got these cheap pannier bags online to see if I can carry more stuff and yesterday I stopped at the grocery store on my way home to pickup a few things and it was a BREEZE. I didn't feel the extra weight at all.

I think my biggest lesson is to go slower than if I was biking for fitness. It adds just a few minutes more to the trip but I feel less worn out.

  1. Nice setup.

I recently switched from saddle bags like yours to clip on panniers, and gotta say I much prefer the clip on panniers. Easier to take on/off, you can bring only one if you don’t need extra space.

Nice! Question on groceries: did you bring your bike into the store with you, or lock it out front?

Which bags are those? I need some but don’t want to drop the $$ on ortilebs yet

  4. Congratulations! I think that 4-6 miles is the optimum bike commute distance. I sometimes wish mine were shorter, even though I enjoy it, just because of the time involved.

  5. Would you need to take off the panniers if you took a bus? Also do you plan on bringing them in with you to work?
