I bought the Chris King Aeroset 3 as shown (not my bike) and can’t believe the gap between the lower bearing and fork. Looks to be caused mostly by the crown race being very thick. Purely for aesthetic reasons I want to replace the crown race with something lower profile. Any crown race with a 45 degree contact angle should work right? Or does anybody have other ideas?

Edit: Related question, what are the specs of the lower bearing? Cannot find it anywhere. Even on the Chris King website they give the specs for the Aeroset 1 & 2 but not the Aeroset 3 for some reason.

  1. King crown races have always been thicker. I wouldn’t use any other one, the dimensioning will likely be slightly different and not contact the bearing fully.

Their integrated headsets (no external cups) do a better job hiding the race, but that’s more a property of the frame.

I would live with it and the excellent durability a King headset brings. Sharpie the race black, maybe.

I wouldn’t switch it out, the seals might not match up. Cane Creek’s crown races kinda do the same thing

They look like it. Last King headset we installed looked exactly like that. Their crown races are astonishingly bullet proof. We did however mod it and cut a slit for easy removal.
