  1. New housing, that hole is just gonna get worse and worse and absolutely will affect shifting and make the bike shift badly and not hold a gear.

My personal bike ? Electrical tape over it and ignore it until it eventually becomes a bigger problem. Customer bike? Replace housing 100% of the time

  3. Oof looks like you need a new bike now /jokes

Are you planning on getting it serviced soon? If so id just run it like that for a bit and have my LBS just do new cables/housing

I would replace the housing and cable.

Another option is to remove the cable on one end and slight some heat shrink on there. That would not look too bad.

  5. There’s another ptfe layer between those strands and the inner cable so if you don’t mind the look of it just stick some tape or heat shrink or something over it

FWIW that just looks like the middle layer of the housing rather than the cable itself. If none of the metal strands are broken, I’d probably try just giving it a wrap with some electrical tape for now.

dropper or shifter cable.. i would just patch that hole up. hard plastic (like from shampoo bottle) then electrical tape over.

I second electrical tape, bit before that I would use something like nail polish so it soaks in between the steel strands to seal it even better

If it’s a personal bike, crazy glue or something over to try to seal it, then electrical tape. Fuck doing all that work unless it’s a bigger problem.

I’ve been running a lockout cable like this for 3 years and it’s fine.

  10. The inner cable is isolated from these longitudinal steel strands. It will take a long time for the rust to affect their strength or for it to make the wires swell so that it impinges on the inner. Just cover it with a sticker or electrical tape and perhaps consider replacing the cable outers a bit sooner than you would otherwise. I replace the outers like once in 25000 km and the rear shift inner about 3 times more often.

You’ll need to replace the housing at some point. It is under stress and that is now a weak spot. It’s a bit of a pain, but schedule it before it fails during a ride.

  12. Looks like its already rusted inside. Did this really just happen? Or are your cables so old, dry, brittle, and corroded that this is the inside of all of them?

I would put a piece of eletrical tape on backwards, like a patch without the glue going into the cable. Then id fix it in place with another piece, glue side down. Im wondering if just taping it could cause more problems, with the heat if the sun melting it into the inner cable, gunking it up

Easiest least “hack” fix would be snipping the exposed section out and maybe just adding an inline barrel adjuster. Personally i would replace the entire cable/housing but thats a bigger job.

That’s only the shifter cable housing for the front derailleur, right? If it fails nothing bad is going to happen, you’ll simply be stuck on the smallest chainring.

So I’d also just put tape over it.

  16. Make a trip to the pediatrician or urgent care, grab a sticker on the way out, use the sticker to cover up the hole.
