The “story” with those barriers and the torn-up road is the final push of the £1.2 million

Burton Cycle Scheme

, specifically

Phase 5

.

These works officially started yesterday, April 20, 2026, and are scheduled to keep the road in its “ripped open” state until May 7, 2026.

What are they actually doing?

This phase is focused on the Town Hall area and the junction near Lidl on Derby Street. The main works include:

Staffordshire County Council +1

Building a two-way cycle track: Linking the railway station directly to the Town Hall.

Utility repairs: One reason the road looks so “ripped up” is that crews are addressing unexpected utility issues found beneath the surface while they have the ground open.

Resurfacing: Both the footways and sections of the main road are being fully replaced.

Upgrades: They are also installing new traffic signals, lighting columns, and upgraded bus stops.

  1. Don't worry everyone, I've checked the plans and apparently that giant hole outside Lidl is actually a specialized 'underground bike storage' unit. Or maybe they just forgot where they put the pipes. Either way, Phase 5 is looking like a bargain at £1.2 million! 🤡🚲
