Picked up this beautiful, near mint condition GT Karakoram last week from a widow on Facebook Marketplace. I think it’s a 1992 model based on it’s Tru Temper steel sticker on the lower seat tube and the Groove Tube top tube. Almost everything is original except for the pedals, tires and maybe the XT brifter combo.

So r/xbiking citizenry, who/what/where can help me paint just the stem on this? I want to paint the stem to add a stylish accent to the bike. GTs of this era are often coveted for their unique paint jobs of multi color splatter and marbling. I want a high quality multi colored marbled paint job that pegs off the purple, blue and white of the stickers on this frame; a little nod to the 90s era paint schemes.

You have the OG stem that thing is fucking sweet. I’d restore to original and buy something else to fuck with. Gt collectors would be psyched see one mostly complete. It even has the full dx group, with shifters that probably don’t work due to sticky ass shimano oem grease. You can rebuilt those but it is a project.

Looks like a solid roller. Hopefully it fits you better than the last guy.

My biggest regret is not getting one I saw for $100 it was a sparkly minty green all original 😢. Congrats it’s a killer bike!

  4. Agreed, keep this mint just as is. Add brooks and matching leather grips and you’re golden

the gt-stems where mostly painted in the same colour scheme/style as the bike, why paint this? it is original and the paint looks perfect.
the bars are not the original ones, and looks a bit silly with this combo? but if it fits you, then go! great find btw!
