This is our first post on Reddit, so we wanted to share something special, like our most memorable bikepacking adventure of 2025.
The idea was to explore about 40 km of an almost abandoned narrow-gauge railroad in the Carpathian Mountains. It still works, mostly for lumberjacks needs, but the whole area feels very quiet and forgotten.
We built a route of around 250 km that includes this railroad section, as usual trying to avoid main roads as much as possible.
Long story short — it was an amazing trip. We followed the land along the narrow-gauge railroad, met some local workers, found a few dead ends, pushed the bikes less than we expected, and discovered that this area is really good for bikepacking.
For some reason it is not very popular, but maybe that is also what made it feel so special.

Looks awesome! The carpathian mountain range has always been on my list.
Did you have any worry of bears? Especially when wild camping. I’ve read that the region has a large bear population.
Romania is an undiscovered, rough, yet unbelievably beautiful diamond in Europe with lots of friendly people and a stunning countryside. You surely had a great time!
Looks amazing and nicely captured photos! What’s the rear rack, top tube bag and front rack you have on that Pride (interesting brand, looks nice)?
Gpx or it didn’t happen!
