On a beautiful sunny but chilly day, I jumped on my Specialized S-Works Tarmac for a 30-mile local loop starting and finishing in Exeter.
I headed out along the Sidmouth Road towards Aylesbeare, then turned onto Withen Lane — the very lane where 13-year-old Genette Tate mysteriously disappeared while on her newspaper round back in 1978, as you’ll see in the video. As I rode through the quiet village, I shared the haunting story of her unsolved disappearance that still affects the local community today.
From there, I continued through the modern new town of Cranbrook before winding through the picturesque villages of Silverton and Thorverton. The route was packed with rolling Devon lanes, quiet countryside, and plenty of character.
To finish, I cruised back into Exeter via the city centre along Queen Street — a perfect sightseeing end to the ride. It was a brilliant mix of peaceful riding, local history, and classic British country lanes (though I did have to deal with a few impatient drivers along the way!).
If you’re into road cycling in Devon or love routes with a bit of history, this one’s well worth checking out.

These observations are what this ride is all about. So hop on, come along, and let’s enjoy another awesome cycling adventure!

  1. Do you like your solo cycling best? I love group rides coffee and cake stops cycling holidays etc. The social side of cycling. We have group rides every Sunday 8am Exeter high street.

  2. "missed a red light by seven seconds" – Does it count as missing it when it's been that long?
It's scary to see some of the people driving now. I've been driving all around the UK and France for over 20 years and never felt in any danger, but now I started cycling I guess I have become more observant and realised what little attention a lot of drivers are actually paying to what is around them.

Looks like someone needs to report that cyclist traffic light next to the pub to fixmystreet, the red light on it isn't working 🙂

  3. Yet again I was close passed and driven at again today this time by a Berk in a Merc. He chased then got out of his car and tried to assault me all because I shouted at him to slow down in a 20 and he was driving at 40+mph. I am sick to death of taking my life in my hands riding a bicycle. In over 40 years of cycling I have been knocked down and hospitalised 4 times by motons. Today having had to call 999 yet again, I decided enough is enough. I give up riding on UK roads. The UK is a shit dangerous country to ride a bike.
