9 Appliance Brands That Are Now Complete Garbage In The UK (Avoid Them In 2026)
A woman in Coventry bought a washing machine in January 2017. She paid £349 for it from a well-known high street retailer, had it delivered and installed the same week, and assumed — reasonably, as any consumer would — that she had made a sensible purchase from a brand she had trusted all her adult life. Her mother had owned one. Her grandmother had been loyal to the name. It felt like a safe decision. In October 2019, she received a letter telling her that machine was a fire hazard. That the door lock mechanism could overheat during a standard cold wash cycle — not even a hot wash, a cold one. That she should unplug it immediately and stop using it entirely. That over 500,000 identical machines had been recalled across the United Kingdom. And that the company had, by multiple accounts, known about the fault for months before notifying a single customer.

Been in the appliance repair trade for 36 years hotpoint even in the 90s had numerous major flaws on washing machines and dryers they where flimsy back then 😒 i worked at a place repairing and refurbishing appliances back then we only refurbished hotpoint cos they sold well people were familiar with the name they gave us more warranty headaches than any other brand by a mile build to a price even back then 🫣 they were one of the first to use sealed drums and control modules needing software and a laptop ro program them this was after the Indesit take over and whirlpool was never responsible for any of the hotpoint design machines they were all hotpoint Indesits doing 🫡 not sure where your information comes from but its a little inaccurate 🤫 the beko take over is a good thing they are better built than hotpoint and a very rarely see beko bearings and drum spiders fail even when not looked after they are not the worst built machines not the best but far from the worsed
I WOULD ONLY BUY SMALL COMPANIES/MIELE APPLIANCE'S, AND AVOID ANY GARBAGE BY
BEKO/HOTPOINT, ETC!!!
A FEW YEARS BACK, I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW TOP-END HOTPOINT AQUALTIS(?) FOR ONLY
£115 ON EBAY, AND HAD IT DELIVERED!
IT WAS ADVERTISED AS HAVING A SMALL LEAK, BUT BUYER NEVER HAD IT FIXED ALTHOUGH
IT HAD A 5 YEAR WARRANTY!!!
I IMMEDIATELY HAD IT REGISTERED, AND CHECKED OUT!
THEY FOUND VERY LITTLE WRONG, BUT AFTER HAVING FOR SEVERAL YEAR'S, IT HAD PROBLEM,
AFTER PROBLEM WHICH WAS FIXED FOR FREE EVERYTIME…THANK GOD!!!
IT WAS A COMPLETE JOKE, AND WAS THEIR FLAGSHIP MODEL, TOO!!!
THERE IS A GOOD NORWEGIAN BRAND CALLED ASKO WHICH WAS REVIEWED BY AN EXPERT,
WHO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IT!!!
I’ve ha a hot point Aquarius for nearly fifteen years the only two things have gone wrong both I repaired myself the program control knob just spun without operating the pot easy fix I tuned up a Tufnell sleeve with an interference fit pushed it on job done total time one hour, next the information control board a couple of small cheapo caps blew their tops causing a chain reaction down the line most components were just good enough for the voltage control I replaced with quality components now all good until the next problem. I bought a side by side Samsung fridge freezer frost free with has a heater I the back panel which stopped working causing the fridge to frost up luckily it was not a year old sum sung replace the whole back panel which housed the small fan not the heating element and thermo switch. They came back again after a week because it frosted up again. The eventual temporary fix it which by the was out of warranty, I played around with it my self for a bit, there’s a blade in the back which I pulled out and checked out the components if found two cheap caps were our of range swapped the dodgy components out work until the compressor stopped working, by now it was eighteen months old it went to the tip. New LG with ten year warranty on the inverter which variable speed controller of the compressor so it doesn’t switch on and off.. this one has been a faithful servant for twelve years a good appliance touch wood…
I have a hand me down washing machine in my outside shed, I've had it 10 years nearly and I think it was about 4 years old before I was given it. So it's about 14 years old, I've replace the door micro switch, drum drive belt and the brushes last year , I've also re fitted the water supply pipe as it slipped off and it's still going strong. I also removed some hair clip from the water pump when the person who owed it before had a problem. I must say I got a good deal when they moved nearly 10 years ago, chest freezer, tumble dryer and this washing machine all for nothing, and all still working , so total cost £0 parts for W/M about £40 max 😂opposite these white goods appliances is my outside toilet and I got the complete toilet, hand basin and taps all for nothing to 😀 I always say if you don't ask you don't get.
I LOVE my new Bosch washing machine, I just bought it this month ..It is a Bosch WGE03408GB Series 2 …. The machine I had before was a Hotpoint NSWR 843C GK UK, and it was rotten to the core ..From DAY ONE, the spin would not spin on the 45 Minute quick wash …. The machine's drum would shake violently even though it was exactly 70% full (So it was not a small, unbalanced load). Often, it would not wash the powder out of the clothes… I tried putting just 25ml of laundry liquid in the machine, and they still came out of the machine sticky with residue laundry liquid on the clothes…. The machine would squeal even though it was only two years old…. I will NEVER buy another Hotpoint washing machine ever again…
So far, I am really happy with my new Bosch WGE03408GB washing machine…It is so quiet and washes the clothes very clean… I was not that much more money than the basic machines …. It was WELL worth spending a bit extra.
Subscribed.
EDIT…. I looked at the Hisense machines, but I have been told the after-sales service is very poor if the machine malfunctions.
So pleased I bought a Bosch.
DOUBLE EDIT….. Any washing machines that come with just a 1 Year warranty = Red flag! Leave it where it is at… i.e., Hotpoint..Indesit …Logik… Bush… Hoover..Candy… If you really must buy an "Enry model" washing machine, I have been told that Beko are the best of the budget machines. But I would try to find the extra money and buy the entry model Bosch series 2 …It will last much longer than a Beko..Bush..Indesit.. Hoover..Logik or Hotpoint.
PAY CHEAP = BUY TWICE. Budget washing machines are a false economy… You THINK you are getting a bargain… No, you are not!
Be prepared to replace it shortly after the warranty has expired…You might get 5 Years out of it if you are very lucky.
Thank you for this video.
Years ago. We had a creda washer dryer. We got the fires brigade out when it started smoking ob tge dry cycle. It was over 5 years old. We've had whirlpool, washing machine only and creda washing machine, beko and now more rubbish a Hotpoint. I wish I knew THEN what I know now. Bosch or Miele are more expensive upfront, but a better buy in the long run. Thank you for this valuable information.
The call out from Domestic and General, is £150. So NOT worth the premium so I cancelled it.
Investigate hoover washing machines. I believe they are installing corrupted software to run their programs. They fix their washing machines all the time with a laptops ? 😮
Damn, this is a well made video, I'm surprised you only got under 1k subs, you should have over 1m, i'm sure you will get there with more videos…Thanks for the heads up on uk manufacturing brands, sadly, its planned obsolescence and these companies want you to buy all the time. I kinda understand in the old days, resources were scare, after the wars, and stuff, things were made to last, now, you can get anything, so things are made fast, cheep and to a price, you just buy a new one, instead of fixing it. Problem is the environmental impact, these company should have a facility to bring the old machine back and recycle them at the factory instead of it going to landfill if they want to do that kind of stuff.
Can't say I have had a bad experience. I have had 3 Zanussi machines in over 30 years and only had to change them when I moved house to upgrade, I think I only had a repair on one of them. One was still going 5 years after I had given it away.
Well I’ve had my Hoover washer dryer for 11 years it’s been amazing still going strong good wash and spin . Always had Hoover wouldn’t touch Hotpoint or the others
I've got a Siemens washer made in Germany.Never misses a beat
I have a Bosh oven, induction hob, washing machine and condenser dryer. All brought from John Lewis I did a lot of research and checked out the reviews and reliability of each I also went for the most eco- efficient. The washing machine and Condenser dryer are coming up to 10 years old now and have been “very reliable” with no breakdowns. The Oven and induction hob have also been super reliable again with no breakdowns. The fridge freezer did develop a fault 9 months into its 3 year guarantee, which had an engineer call out to replace the “control board” and has been very reliable since. What concerned me though was if I had brought the replacement part from Bosch myself and fitted it “ IT WOUKD NOT HAVE WORKED” this is because BOSCH are now employing “PARTS PAIRING”. The BOSCH engineer once fitted the part pulled out a “Diagnostic Tool” connected to Bosch HQ and downloaded “PAIRING SOFTWARE and CODES” then it was up and running.
So YES, BOSCH and SEIMENS are I believe a “Quality Product “ and with pay extra for.
Hotpoint, used to be good, but wouldn’t trust Hotpoint,Beko,Indesit,Samsung,AEG,Zanussi,Candy,Hoover or whirlpool, as far as I could throw them, but one of those and your “ASKING FOR TROUBLE”
Kitchen Aid is another I would not trust unless it the early (HOBOLT) built machines.
Kitchen brands to trust that will last and you can get spares for
Bamix (Switzerland)
Dullit. (British)
Maganix (French)
Vitamix. (USA)
All these will outlast most of the other junk and have a comprehensive spare part supply.
When it comes to new stuff 2022 onwards, (White Goods) be aware of the “PARTS PAIRING” trap, getting the part is the easy bit, but to “PAIR IT” you need the manufacturer engineer!!!!!
For washing machines, I have stuck to Bosch and AEG (John Lewis) for the last 25 years and have yet to replace the one I have had for the last eight years. However, in 2019 I bought a cheap Beko dishwasher for only £200! It's still going strong, performs well and has been worth every penny!
I use an LG. And it's good to service I know as I have had the top off. I won't touch and German or Turkey owned washing appliances.
I quite like the NEF induction hob and old Zanussi ovens and washing machines.
My Miele washing machine lasted 15 years, the spider failed, my Miele tumble dryer is 20 so is my Miele vacuum cleaner, I purchased a new Miele washing machine, all good so far.
Fokin bots all the coments deffending the brands!!!
Non of my two 58" 4k samsung tv have ever give me problems or my samsung washer Dryer Series 5 or my samsung fridge or my samsung note 20 ultra s24 ultra s25 ultra. The washer Dryer is brilliant i set it all off my phone the machine washes and drys and lets me know when its finished on my phone and the tv tells me my washer is finished and I can put my washing straight away, ive not had to put washing on the radiators or put it all in separate tumble dryer for a couple of years now
after several short lived washing machines we bought a Bosch, it only lasted as long as the previous buys so we got a Meile, that too only lasted a few years, we just but something that looks nice, £280 is cheap, it's not worth losing sleep over.
Our worst buys have been SMEG, we had a new kitchen and replaced the oven and a £3000 fridge freezer, the fridge freezer never really worked properly, the ice/water dispenser dripped, the door went rusty and had to be replaced under warranty, it broke all together after 3 years, the door doesn't close properly, it's very noisy even through the night I suspect it will be very expensive to run, the range oven works okay but the clock has a couple of elements that don't illuminate, the clock itself broke and has been replaced but they couldn't replace the actually display for some reason. SMEG has been both our worst purchases and by far the most expensive, something like double what the alternatives would have cost.
Whirlpool is an American company and bought Indesit in 2014.
Is it then surprising that it reduces the quality of the product at the expense of the consumer.
Same with a lot of European firms that get taken over by American businesses.
Beko for me.
Easy to use and so far after almost 10 years still going strong.
Instant sub.
Safety first of course, this is disgusting.
But also cheap crap design with a shiny plastic cover.
E.g. can't clean the machine. At all.
Can't open the filter without flooding the kitchen.
If Dyson or anyone wants to help regular folk, they need to solve decades-old problems.
Then factory quality standards, training, oversight…
This is just a rant about a modern situation. No advice about what we consumers should do about it.
Query; who in Britain refers to items as garbage? That’s more an American term. So can one believe this article?
I tell you what. We have Haier appliances and they are amazing. Our heat pump tumble uses 489wh for a 3 hour cycle – yes less than half a kWh and it does not get hot. The plug is also cool so we run it overnight. Haier are over looked but they are amazing. Our washing machine uses about the same and the dish washer even less.
Yes, I have found this out the hard way. 'Stainless Steel' parts that rust and break and are impossible to change, meaning the machine will fail within the next year, and it is just outside its guarantee period.
My previous washing machine had been originally designed to be split but they kept the design but welded the case together instead of bolting it. Had 2 drum replacements when should have just had the bearings replaced. The second drum started sounding bad after a year of light use so even the replacements were getting worse.
Washing machines should be repairable yet the Govt. turn a blind eye to these shenanigans. They bang on about being eco yet allow companies to manufacture land fill devices.
Washing machines are just the start of it – soon it will be all white goods. Fridges have already started, dishwashers next, then Microwaves and cookers.
Samsung worst – arrived and it was faulty. Replacement arrived and again faulty. Replaced with an LG and happy. Can't aford a Miele.
Many of these problems are due to "THE. USER" . The Machines are "OVERLOADED" Drums stuffed with washing . How long do users expect apliances to last with the abuse they get. Tumble Dryer "PROBLEMS" are mainly due to users "WILL NOT CLEAN FILTERS" .
I use a beko washer dryer and it's good. And half the price of other brands too
I don't think companies should be allowed to buy the names of old quality brands and stick them on rubbish. If a manufacturer goes bust, that name should be frozen from being used again for many years.
I have a Beko Washing machine that is almost 10 years old now, when it goes I would still buy another Beko, alot of washing machine reliablity is also down to how you use it, if you use higher temperatures (ie 60 to 90 weekly) especially in hard water areas you will wear it out faster compared to using 30 and 40 programmes, but I also have a Beko fridge freezer that is 15 years old, again I trust the brand, I wouldn't trust a Samsung or hotpoint one as I have family where they have changed their machine or had it fixed several times in the time span I've had my Beko, another factor is doing the right wash load, oddly my Beko has had a few jumping in the kitchen moments in it first few years but it's still going, so quality is clearly not as bad as being made out compared to say a hotpoint where once the 2 year warranty is up it breaks down
I have a 30 year old Creda washing machine that is still going.
It has had just one repair about 25 years ago.
I think if I ever needed to replace it, I'd choose an Ebac …. totally made in England with a 7 year parts and labour warranty.
