I was riding up a small incline in low gear, heard a snap and discovered that my smaller chainring had completely bent and collapsed. Has anybody ever seen anything like this? It's less than a year old, so i'm trying to get it under warranty. But i'm very curious how common this is, i've never heard of anything like this. Haven't done any weird stuff or crashes with it.

  1. Not terribly common, but it happens, it’s not common to be able to find a cause either.

  2. It’s likely the chainring bolt was either loose or already missing for this to happen. Did you find the chainring bolt nearby?

  3. Yes, this can happen if the charinring bolts get loose and fall off.
At least one is missing on the inside of your crank.

  4. looks like there are still threads in that bolt hole. most likely overtightened the chainring mounting bolts. for it to collapse after the bolt head snapped off doesnt feel like a warranty issue to me. unless it came mounted from the factory of course

  5. Everything collapses if you remove enough bolts.
On a chainring one bolt can be enough.

Is the frame ok? Good result if so, folding the chainring like that can cause damage.

Kindly doubt you’ll get a warranty on a 5 quid part that wasn’t bolted on properly.

It looks like either the bolt snapped, or it was not properly tightened and fell off. The chainring is designed to be supported by that bolt, remove that support and this will happen.
