I noticed my front bag was wobblier than usual on my commute home, and on closer inspection he top rivet nut insert seem to have pulled through the frame. I was hoping to drill it out and replace it with a larger thread, but the insert just turns in the hole and won't unscrew. I really hope its just the paint finish flaking and not a split in the frame itself.
Any ideas?😥

From your pics that looks too deep to just be paint. I wouldn’t be confident that a fix would last, and you don’t want to damage things further. The frame has a 7 year warranty so I’d contact Brompton about getting it replaced.
Looks like the metal has an actual crack in it, to me.
One way to find out for sure, drop the forks out, & if you see daylight through it, it’s bad.
Uhh that is definitely toasted frame.
How heavy is your bag usually?
Yup, there’s a fracture on the frame. There’s no other way to fix it than a replacement under warranty from Brompton.
Oh that’s fucked…. OP what the heck did you put on the front end? You’ll need a whole new head tube assembly and that’s if Brompton warranty you as well I suspect they’ll say you overloaded the front block.
Wow didn’t think this was even possible on a steel frame?? How does steel crack and bend like that from just weight on the front carrier block!
Even with a lot of weight, that seems like a really strange crack, no?
That’s… wild. How did the plastic of the bag frame, the carrier block, or even the bolts not give out first?
I carry _a lot_ more than the 10kg limit on mine, all the time, for years, and I’ve never seen something like this. Although I did have the bolts break once, requiring a head tube replacement.
If you want to fix this, there’s no way around some welding. It’s steel, so no biggie
Yes, your whole bike could be. That’s why there’s plenty of subsidized commuter programs with bromptons in the UK
If out of warranty, potentially if available you could get a new front end and get the next size up front hinge pin fitted, or take to someone who can brake.
Definitely contact Brompton.Â
Given the G line was only released in the last few years this is a fairly new bike and you could almost definitely argue “not fit for purpose” if needed to force a resolution from them.Â
Unless you have massively overloaded the front mount, that is.Â
Brompton will replace that no bother
For sure their warranty must cover this. Rest assured.
Talk is through how this happened?
Sometimes Brompton design goes backwards. This is a perfect example
You don’t even know what a write off is
IMO that is frame warranty repair. If the bag was too heavy it should have broke the plastic first
Should be covered by 7 year frame warranty
Oh man. Yeah that’s probably buggered.Â
Guessing you over loaded it?
