Saw the post from yesterday and wanted to brag about my masterpiece: 10 speed 11-42 x 42/32/22

If you plug this into a gear calculator, you will notice that this technically requires a capacity of 51t, which no stock derailer is capable of. This is technically true, but I have found that the SRIDE M410 is actually completely capable of handling it, even though it is only rated for a capacity of 49t. Unfortunately, my M410 took a beating last autumn, and Ive replaced it with the Microshift M62L, which is clearly being pushed past it's limits but still shifts through all the gears just fine.

I would be extremely impressed if anyone can beat this gear range without internal gear hub fuckery. And before you ask: yes, I do actually use all of the speeds. I work in downtown Seattle and the hills are insane.

  1. Do not stop whatever this is. More. MORE GEAR RANGE. MORE I SAY.

I wanna see it look like vintage road bike gearing but reversed, you hear me? 11-21 up front, 54-42 in the rear.

  2. Take my upvote you mad bastard 🤪

I’m really gonna miss my triple chainring on my next build, but the 2 x brifters were so cheap I couldn’t resist them.

  3. Bikepacking-NL on

Shimano RD M3020 also looks promising for this challenge. That cage is loooong

  4. Nice.

Also, did you weld struts between your seat and chain stays, or is that just the fashion these days?

  5. Sturmey Archer makes an IGH with a cassette hub (CS-RK/RF3) No fuckery required, just installation!

  6. Have you all considered using the sturmey 3 speed hubs that also accept a cassette? Could tip the scales!

  7. Geez, my 3×8 has more range than I can use. 44-32-22 up front and 11-32 in the rear. 22+32 gear is too easy to really use.
