In anticipation for a dirt ride this past sunday, I got some panaracer smokes (ran paselas prior to this). Folding bead, tan walls, light and supple, probably the best tires could get locally on such short notice. They’re fantastic. The day before the dirt ride, I got about 25 miles in on pavement. dirt ride was 10 miles mixed of pavement, dirt, sand, and lots of climbing and boy do these things climb. Despite lack of reference to other tires, I can’t really complain. They’re so nice.

  1. Such a cool ride with amazing scenery. Thanks for sharing pics! I’ve almost always ran knobbies and absolutely love the grip and reliability. I recently bought a 98 Hard Rock Classic that has tires like those on the right in your last pic and haven’t gotten around to swapping them. They’re OK, but a bit slippery and I won’t keep them long-term.

These tires are not very good on the front. The standard combo BITD was Smoke on the rear and Dart on the front. The wide paddles that make Smoke good on the back offer very little lateral traction which is what you want on the tire that steers. Dart has long knobs running in the direction of the tire.
