Picked up this bike in a pretty sad state in 2021, I have now replaced everything on it except the frame and gave up on it being a budget build a long time ago!!

Just swapped out the old slightly bent original threaded fork for a Surly Troll 26" threadless fork/headset. Axle to crown is about 20mm higher but it feels really great and I can't really notice a difference in handling.

This is tied for my favorite bike with my 1990 Trek 970, I really love the 90s steel frames.

Cheers from MN!

  1. Sweet!

I grew up in the Twin Cities and suburbs. There’s some great riding around there.

    I’m riding a 92 970 now around Tahlequah OK.

No problem or complaints about your way of building it. That is fine for you. Great job rebuilding. That said, I would have done one thing a bit different. I would have cut the fork steer tube a bit shorter and used a higher rise handlebar. I like the VO Klunker bar on a bike like this. However it is a bit on the heavy side.
