I bought this trek 7.5fx about 10yrs ago. Ive barely used it and it has been kept under cover in the garage. I think it's in great condition, no rust, gears are smooth, brakes ok etc.
The brighter weather is here and I'm considering using it for my 1.5mi (yes one and a half miles) commute. It's not far, but I've always been lazy and used car. Partly because roads aren't great, the weather always sucks and also because I usually go home at lunch.
The tyres are 32, can I go bigger?
And how does the bike compare to more modern bikes?

Sounds fine to me. I use both and Elops Speed 900 for my work commute and an older MTBish bike with 34 tyres and single speed conversion for grocery shopping. Yours is like a cross between the two.
Get better fenders – especially one that can accomodate a rack at the rear and you have a perfectly fine commuter. V-Brake and the 3x something drive train betray the age but it’s more than fine as long as everything is tuned correctly.
