I am unpacking and reassembling my new bike for the first time after traveling. My LBS packed it for me

This is my first time working directly with a derailleur. There are so many nuts and gears and things to tighten or loosen.

As I shift I can't get my chain to the biggest gear. Afraid to overtighten and snap something.

Pedaling is also noisy, like things are bumping against each other instead of having enough space

Trying to find videos to help. I just want smooth complete shifting and confidence that nothing is too loose or tight.

Reattaching my derailleur for the first time – I bit off more than I can chew

This should teach you everything you need to know.

Not to sound patronising, as anyone learning to wrench is great! But it’s actually not too hard of a job, you can do it!

There’s only 3 screws on the derailure itself. The Lower limit, the upper limit, and the B tension.

The upper limit keeps the chain on the little cog without falling off.

The lower limit keeps the chain on the big cog without falling into the wheel.

The B-tension basically controls how close the derailleur is to the cassette, but chances are you don’t need to adjust it, or not very much.

But yeah there’s a reason why the Parktool video shown has 13 million views, which is like 200x more than their normal videos – it’s a super common thing to need help with.

Edit; I want to also add, as I was often too scared to do anything Incase I broke it. Realistically you can’t fuck this up! Worst case you just undo what you did ( most of the time, not saying it’s impossible to do damage, but I think you would have to use a lot of force )

Like what? H, L and B screws, and barrel for indexing…

You won’t, but I guess you know wheen you hit the end to stop it, you can simply feel that.

    This is all you need
