I am thinking about buying this bike (GRVL AF Apex 1×12 – Van Rysel) mostly because it is currently at 1200 euros at my local Decathlon. I am bit worried about the gear ratio of the groupset (newbie here).

I will ride mostly in Poland which is pancake flat but I also plan to do some touring around Europe (Nordkapp, Pyrenees, Alpe Adria, Canary Islands) so I am not sure if a 11-44 cassette is safe?

What options do I have? Can this derailleur take 11-50 cassette?

my ideal scenario would be to have two sets

an everyday/weekend set with a 42T front and 11-50 in the rear

a touring setup with an 40 or 38T front and 11-50 in the rear.

Any help much appreciated.

So, this is going to depend on your muscle type, fitness level, You can certainly move the range up and down with the front cog. Check the bike frame spec for the max and min chainring. Similarly, you can pull the derailleur model from the bike spec and look it up on the SRAM site. You want to know “max cog” and “derailleur capacity”.
[gear-calculator.com](http://gear-calculator.com) should help you play around with the effects of different setups.

EDIT: max tooth is 44, so no 50. No capacity listed, so probably not 2x compatible and just a 34 or so capacity. Your only variable is the single chainring size.
