The Ruhrtal Radweg begins in Winterberg, a well-known winter sports destination in the Sauerland region of Germany. Here, in the Rothaar Mountains, the Ruhr River is born. Over the course of more than 240 kilometers, it winds its way westward before joining the Rhine in Duisburg.
What makes this route so special is the character of the Ruhr itself. The river constantly meanders through a varied landscape, with the dedicated cycling path switching from one side of the river to the other. At times the river narrows into a quiet stream, only to open up again into wide, scenic stretches.
Along the way, the contrast between nature and culture is striking. In the eastern section, you’ll experience peace, space, and untouched landscapes. As you continue west, the scenery gradually transforms into the industrial heart of the Ruhr region—where former factory complexes have been reinvented as impressive cultural landmarks.
This diversity makes the Ruhrtal Radweg one of Germany’s most unique and enjoyable long-distance cycling routes.
