Mostly Ultegra parts, the cables are far too long and need to be trimmed down.

I’m in SW London, so fairly flat until the hills of Surrey, so 1x is a bit of an experiment. that chainring is 58 teeth so I’m thinking either get a road link and a 11-42t range cassette or get a smaller chainring. Thoughts?

Coming from track bikes and the fact that 99% of my rides will probably be round Richmond Park I’m thinking to stick with it (and maybe even the small range cassette on it now (11-30t)

hopefully I’ll find time to put the new chain on tomorrow and actually get to ride it!

  1. Mate, 58t chain ring is beyond bonkers. That’s what pros ride in TTs. And those guys get to start down a ramp.

Consider this: at 58/28 your minimum comfortable speed is around 25km/h.

As for your plans to put a 42t cog in: you’ll need a derailleur that can support that. Ultegra doesn’t, as far as I know.

Another thing you will want to consider are gear steps. With such a huge chain ring and a 42t cassette in the back you’ll get around 17 or so, and differences of like 1m of development.

Play a bit with [the setup](https://ritzelrechner.de/?GR=DERS&KB=58&RZ=11,13,15,17,19,21,24,28,32,37,42&UF=2215&TF=90&SL=2.6&UN=KMH&DV=teeth) and then get yourself a setup that’s gonna allow you to get going before the lights turn red again.

Also, consider Dutch hills. It may be flat, but have you taken the wind into account? Can you go 30km/h into a 30km/h head wind?

  2. “Coming from track bikes…”

Just because you’re used to mashing way too high of a gear doesn’t mean it’s the smart thing to do when building a road bike. But you do you.

  3. Get rid of that chainring. The teeth are completely shot and will destroy your chain, if it hasn’t already.

Pop a 50 on there and see how it works. Go from there.
