Hi, i bought a second hand bike with carbon wheels (first rim brakes road bike and first bike with carbon wheels). Just wondering if I should be concerned with the level of wear on the rim tracks? I took it to my LBS for a tune-up and he didn't mention anything about them

Your local bike shop would definitely have looked at the condition of the rims {they’re a wear item} as part of the service. Call them and ask what they thought about the wear on them.

  2. Unless they are worn to the point you can see carbon starting to fail it is virtually impossible to tell from a photo.

This is something that needs a hands on look so that you can check how thick the carbon on the brake track is.

First generation carbon clincher rim brake wheels are definitely in a category unto themselves, as something of an evolutionary dead end which indirectly brought us into the disc brake era. In terms of wear, these ones don’t seem to be too bad at a glance, but as a category, they are frankly something for which I was always very wary and personally I’d probably just sell to the next daredevil in favor of some high quality aluminum wheels.
