I’ll use the winter break to put on some new tires – any recommendations that improve comfort & grip while keeping the aesthetic?

Lovely. Hard to find this era of Peugeots w/ reynolds or columbus in the States where I am.

It’s a lovely bike and a lovely color. French bikes are generally quite stylish!
I wonder– to get a better climbing gear, could you change the crankset to a triple? In addition to the crankset, you might need to swap in a longer bottom bracket spindle, and maybe a different front derailleur… would OP need anything else? Might be with it for your riding pleasure…
Wheels, brakes, seat and maybe the cranks and derailleurs (not seen) are upgrades. The sticker has a number which could be “5xx” Reynolds. (501, 502 or 531). I have a late ’70’s Peugeot “Iseran” with internal lugs or brazed internal joints. I like the clean look and these ride great. That seat is really up there. How does the bike handle?

Great color!
Not sure if theyโre readily available in Austria but Iโm very pleased with my [Rene Herse Tires.](https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/tires/700c/700cx28-chinook-pass/)
They are very supple in the Extralite casing and donโt have garish graphics on the sidewall.
The colour with that background is… Amazing.
