so i went with a new chain in the spring, after all the abuse during winter. ordered the same as before, shimano original from ROSE here in Germany.
I get heavy skipping in all gears, and cannot for the life of me figure out why. the old chain was completely done for, and worked just fine.
I thought maybe the teeth on the cassette were worn out, but i get the skips even in the lowest gear / largest ring.
any ideas what is actually going on? never had this in the past 30 years of cycling…

Is the chain the same length?
Theeth dont look worn but I would still choose to replace the cassette. That is only thing I can think of for fixing this (if adjusting the cable didnt work)
“…the old chain was completely done for…” is the key phrase. When a chain is very worn (1% or more as indicated with an appropriate chain checker) it begins in accelerate the wear on the cassette and chainrings. Your symptoms are very typical of a worn cassette failing to properly mesh with a new chain. The cassette needs to be replaced.
Your worn out chain wore out the cassete. It will now not work with a new chain. This is actually pretty common.
Your cassette is worn just like the old chain and needs to be replaced
your cassette don’t look bad at all.
Did you try tuning your rear d? Skipping at all gears sounds like a tuning problem.
maybe your front chainring is worn out? are you sure its skipping in the back?
Easy. Cassette is done and needs replacing aswell. Sprockets may be worn too. Try cassette first.
How do your front rings look like?
Just changed the chain on my 9sp cassette and triple front. New chain is fine except for the one sprocket on the cassette which has thousands of miles of use on it. It’s flat locally and I never change gears! The sprocket doesn’t look particularly worn compared to the rest of the cassette, but it’s causing the chain to jump instantly I change to it. I’m changing the cassette this weekend.
There is noticeable wear on the higher gears (will likely need to be replaced) but the lower ones look OK, how is your front ring looking?
Replace chain and cassette at the same time.
