TL;DR

Anyone wanna give me some tips as to what brakes I might be able to replace these Exage Mountains with?

Hope this is the right place! I have a rat bike build built from my dads old GT, and I have to replace my brakes.

I have been around every single bikeshop in my area, and all of them say that I need the same Shimano Exage Mountain brakes (AKA they took one squinty look at my bike in general and said that I had to be insanely lucky and find the ones I have now). I’ve been deep down the rabbit hole, I can’t for the life of me find if this is the only type of cantilever brakes that I can use…

Ps: sorry for the dirty bike. Winter in Norway isn’t the friendliest bike environment, and if you don’t have a garage there is no way to clean and store your bike without paying an insane amount

  1. Look on ebay for ‘U-brakes’. In the UK at least they’re not super hard to find. Not common, but not hen’s teeth either.

Not sure anyone makes a new version of them, but if they do it’s from the murky world of BMX which I am not very familiar with!

That’s a u-brake, not canti, and you can find modern BMX u-brakes that fit

Just to add, unfortunately you can’t replace it with any other brake types, has to be u brake because of the brake boss positions.

As others said you need an ‘U brake’, canties or Vs wont fit these bosses.
