Would the following activities cause this bike to split in half over the course of 6 months?

  • Multiple laps on a beginner MTB trail with moderate jumps
  • Jumping multiple times on a 13" inch ramp and landing on a concrete sidewalk
  • Attempting multiple wheelies

This is a youth bike. The bike split in half during a normal, cruising ride. According to the youth cyclist, the handle bar started wobbling before it split. Luckily, the cyclist only sustained bruises on the chest, face, and hands, but otherwise, no broken bones.

wow…… That is a cheapy $200 bike. It is not a jump bike, it is a trail bike. I guess it really depends on what this kid was actually doing. But still, jumping and landing on concrete? Would have been better off with a steel BMX bike.

Damn glad they are okay. I bought one for my son that I was going to build up and when it was stripped to the frame I dropped it in my garage. It made the weakest sounding “ting” i’ve heard from a bike. I ended up throwing the frame in the trash.

  3. these are the kinds of risks you run with a walmart brand bike. especially if you’re jumping them. the quality control is probably lacking at best. the downtube looks misshapen where it sheared off. i’d buy a more trusted branded frame if you’re going to keep pushing them with jumps.

I always get pissed when I see people praise Walmart bikes. So many great used MTB’s out there on rock solid aluminum frames for the same price or less.

You definitely went way too hard on this thing for what it is, but it’s still wild to see.

If you’re going new, The Polygon Cascade is a much better budget option. You get what you pay for. [https://bikesonline.com/products/polygon-cascade-2-mountain-bike-new?variant=51160244060452](https://bikesonline.com/products/polygon-cascade-2-mountain-bike-new?variant=51160244060452)

That’s a pretty gnarly failure. I’m glad to hear the rider didn’t suffer more serious injuries.

  6. Interesting! Usually bikes fail at the welds. This one the tubes clearly failed. This isn’t a QC issue, just a design/use issue.

  7. damn and I heard a lot of good things about ozark trail bikes. there was a post of a decathlon bike with similar failure recently. scary stuff.

  8. This is what happens when you decide to make frames out of toilet paper and paper towel tubes.

Post this is the welding sub, I’m sure those guys will be able to tell you why.

  10. This a bike doing its walmarty things being from Walmart and all; I wouldn’t ride it even if it was free.

  11. I say this in all sincerity: it’s not worth your time trying to understand why this bike split in half. The core, underlying reason will always boil down to: “it’s a cheap bike that was cheaply made. It’s meant to be disposable.” (Yes, disposable.)

IMO, your time is better spent looking at quality bikes that you can purchase used if affordability is a concern. Look for reputable brands like: Specialized, Trek, REI Co-op, etc. These brands design and develop bikes that are intended to last years, if not decades.

Damn, glad the rider only got some bruises, that could have been a catastrophic crash at speed or when doing a jump.

  13. Walmart doesn’t sell bikes, they sell bike-shaped objects.

That’s why the come with a warning sticker on the frame that explicitly says not to do any wheelies/trail riding/jumping.

Mechanical engineer here. This looks like a HAZ (heat effected zone) failure. This is a manufacturing process failure. Do report this.

  15. At least you didn’t endanger yourself with poor decision making; just your kid….

This happened because the massive retailer went to it’s supplier and said, either put bikes in my store at this price point, or I’ll find somebody else who will.
