From 2012-2015 and 2020-2024 I was a regular, all-weather bike commuter. Changed jobs to another city in '24 that required driving at least part way and never quite made the jump to multi-moding it so started riding less (just groceries really, and then not even that). Got run over by a car at the end of '24 while out on a walk, so took time to recover.
Moved to a slightly more bike friendly city (where I don't work) in early '25 and, though not fully recovered physically, did get a good ride in once – and then slipped into a pretty tense mental state that might have been long coming from getting run over previously. Sat on the bike and just couldn't go. Put the thing away a few weeks, bought a new bike a few months later to try and shake that – didn't work, was still having some recovery issues besides.
Fast forward to last weekend and I finally hopped on, did 6 or 7 miles just trying myself and the environs out. I've always had weak legs or poor power output, but I definitely am worse off now than when I was a regular (which isn't great because I was never good). Atrocious climbs. Still leaning too hard on the bars, getting my hands falling asleep, too. But I was riding, and that's better than not riding, yeah?
Still need to build confidence up again but I can already tell I'm doing better than last spring on that front – even biked in traffic for the first time in about a year. I would go back to bike commuting to work, but while our trains between the cities are bike friendly, I'm not physically capable of carrying a bike up and down stairs like a normal person so it isn't realistic at this time. Might see about a cheap single speed to take to the station and home soon though…
Anyway enough trauma dumping, I just wanted to show off my bike for the first time in a while, will probably be selling it on or giving it away to one of the groups here in the city sometime in the near future after I've had one last big adventure on it.
