A fan of the UK’s long distance cycle touring routes, Roy felt that many cycle tourers and Audax riders were missing out on the beauty and history of his adopted county. Being a Cycling UK local advocate, Roy presented this idea to Cycling UK, with a view to them adding it to their portfolio of routes, including the Cantii Way, Rebellion Way, and King Alfred’s way. While sympathetic, CUK had no money to create this, so Roy set out to create and promote the route himself – at no cost! With the help and knowledge of local riders, the 300 mile King John Way route is nearing completion. This video tracks our first test ride of the Grantham to Woodhall Spa section. This was a two day ride to explore the quality of the route and to ensure that the issues he encountered on the Cantii Way were excluded from The King John Way. A website is currently under construction and a detailed route map has been produced. Ride with GPS has kindly donated their Organisation Membership so we can provide riders with a detailed GPX route, which includes all of the detail they will need for sightseeing, cycle secure accomodation, free car parking and cycle friendly cafe stops. Here is a link to the map, but please note that this is still a work in progress as a full route recce needs to be completed:

About
I am Roy, born in 1952, Living in Lincolnshire UK (the hilly part!) and enjoying cycling more each day. In need of a double knee replacement, I still manage to knock out 150 mile rides – but at a relaxed pace! With so many YouTube channels devoted to loud, fast talking, testosterone fuelled, cycling heroes, I thought you might enjoy joining us on some of our more relaxed adventures. I say us because I am usually joined by my best cycling buddy, Wendy. Much younger than me (she makes clear), and very petite, Wendy can achieve 100 mile + rides with no trouble. We are slow mainly because we enjoy smelling the roses and stopping to seek out historical sights. This is made much easier as we both ride graves bikes – Wendy a Liv Devote and me a Planet X Tempest Titanium. We often stray from the planned route to dive off down an inviting looking track. I usually add details of the routes we take, on Strava, at the end of each video so you can ride them if you wish. Wendy is prone to bursting into song, although there’s no chance of a copyright strike as she only ever remember the first verse and even then it’s unrecognisable. We have ridden Edinburgh to Grantham, Coast to Coast on the The Way of The Roses and the Cantii Way in Kent. We sometimes also ride ebikes, mainly if we have things to carry. You will have gathered that we love a bit of banter and let you share in our humour, so please come along and Ride with Roy (and Wendy)

I am always seeking out new and innovative products and was the first to introduce the Tyre Glider. I am VERY selective about what I review and when I do agree to test something, I test it over a long period so I can give an honest opinion.

  1. Good ride, nice to see a road based tour rather than off road backpacking. I have suggestion that you might think of Ebike charging places as Ebike touring will become more popular, keep up the good work👍

  2. Keep meaning to get my backside up to Lincolnshire, specifically Skellingthorpe. Doing the King John Way will be even more of an incentive to have a short cycling holiday in Lincolnshire! Bought a Brompton last year, so with the help of a train….👍👍🙂🛩️🛩️🛩️🚲🚲🚲 Well done Roy, and Wendy!

  3. A nice cafe stop in Stamford is Frothys in Ironmonger street, although not bike racks, but they have put a group rides bikes, just inside a side door, when they first opened they got a lot of support from local cyclists and still recognise how cyclists helped them out with customers when they struggled at first.

  4. How was it going over Helpston crossing, it can be a bit frightening if you are about halfway across and the alarm starts to warn barriers are about to come down,

  5. Like I said yesterday, you are an inspiration. I have cycled quite a bit of your route. I am in Market Deeping, so these routes are familiar. I use an e-bike mostly these days, I generally manage 50+ miles on a charge, your circular route would be an ideal adventure especially if I could charge up overnight. Looking forward to part 2. Many thanks for taking the time to share your experiences.
