This week we’re taking the ferry from Portsmouth in England to Saint-Malo in France with our American RV and the dogs and its safe to say it wasn’t all smooth sailing πŸ˜…

After the RV refusing to start multiple times we were relived to finally make it to France and start our next European adventure. πŸ‡«πŸ‡·πŸš

BACKGROUND STORY

We’re Michael and Fern, we recently sold our house to travel full time in an American RV with our two dogs Max & Jet 🚐🌎

We were tired of spending of 20s being stuck in jobs we hated. In 2022 we started our own business which now allows us to work remotely.

Everyone usually waits until they are older or retired to do this and that makes no sense to us so we decided to go for it and start living life now! ❀️

  1. Your starting issue sounds like it could be the starter motor solenoid as I can hear the starter motor spinning when you turn the key. Back in the day this issue was addressed by giving the solenoid a tap with a hammer to get it to engage … but yes, get it sorted properly as one day it just isn’t going to start at all.

  2. Great video. I had the same issue starting my first car a Ford Anglia. I had an old wax sheet to lie under the car and every time it would not start I hit the starter motor underneath the car and it started! I am sure you are aware but you need to get it fixed asap if you have not already done so. Regards Crawford

  3. Just a quick question πŸ˜… was there EES checks when you went through which I think started 12th Oct

Did you need to register your biometrics. This involves scanning your passport, having a facial scan taken, and providing fingerprints?
I’m wondering how much this is being enforced.

Hope you get that starter fixed … ours does similar a thing sometimes!
    Happy travels πŸŽ‰β€

  4. Hi guys glad you made it over to France, you should get the starter motor fixed as soon as possible & don't leave it to late just in case you get stuck. Enjoy France guys πŸ™

  5. We too had to pay for LPG before we could fill up when we were last in France. Not sure if it’s a new thing as we hadn’t had to do this before. Looking forward to watching your travels, we will be leaving the UK soon for our winter trip. Enjoy your travels.

  6. Glad you’re on the road again ! I didn’t think you could take raw meat across the channel ? Don’t fancy mixing the food though, not sure what we’re going to do for our dogs !
Get that starter fixed ASAP, or you could end up with bigger problems. Take care x

  7. You're starting issues could be down to a battery that is failing.
A battery with low voltage will increase amps to the starter motor this in turn can damage the starter motor so first step load test the battery at a good at a garage.
    Bon voyage..

  8. So the ng has a distinct sound in french, bain de bretagne would be 'ban de bret an yer' I live near a town called magnac laval and hearing brits say mag nac laval is always a giggle, its pronounced man yak laval, and when the pronounce Montmorillon sounding the L's you can tell theyre newbies πŸ˜‚. Always a good giggle in the bars and restaurants. Type it in google translate and press the speaker button. I head home on thursday back to France, love driving the roads and will be nice to get back to somewhere calmer after just over a year bavk and forth to the UK for work.

  9. Also be careful, if you break down on the motorways, because they are private roads getting towed off them is expensive, i would stop at a large city and on the outskirts you usually find caravan, motorhome type shops and see if any of them have mechanics and get it fixed. I had a solenoid replaced on a car of mine in france last year, cost me €100 total, it was like that, not starting first time and then eventually was just completly dead, would be more for and rv I expect but cheaper than the whole starter motor. Not many garages would be able to fix your rv due to its size and weight, I wouldnt want to keep going without getting it repaired.

  10. Great to see you on the road again & enjoying yourself in France . I can’t wait to see what you guys get up to this time. I thought I would let you know that you have inspired me to also take the plunge in travelling so I’ve just returned from the Camping &Caravan show at the NEC & yes I bought a Motorhome . So my journey will start next April when I get it. Can you let me know a bit more about the tolls in France &do you use them to get South? All the time ? Keep well ❀

  11. Could feel the tension each time you were starting the RV. I have an old VW and it suffered the same problem when I brought it over to France years ago. The solenoid would not engage the starter. This was remedied by getting under the vehicle and battering the solenoid with a mallet. Worked each time ! My 6 month Visa expired on the 9th October but I will now revert to 90/180 day rule until next year. I am flying into Poitiers on Tuesday for a week or so. This means I will need to start counting the days spent in the EU once again. Have you not β€˜christened’ the RV yet ? My VW is called Fergus …. Fergus Ma Van πŸ˜‚!!

  12. Hi guys, i think you should get rid of the immobilizer, that could be the culprit. I have a Winnebago 2004, it had the same symptom, i had to cycle the immobiliser a couple of times before it would start, so go easy on the ignition lock, if you break it, it could be even a bigger problem. Best of luck!

  13. I'm a bit surprised how disorganised you are for your European trip! Leaving getting the dog food till the evening before you travel and going with a vehicle you are scared to turn off in case it won't start! I hope the dogs don't have bad tummies from the change of diet and that your RV doesn't break down completely! 😬

  14. You did the right thing getting your dog food in France as it is against the rules/laws to take meats and dairy into Europe from the UK. Plus it’s great to support the country you’re in by shopping local, as you found out with the lovely Boulangerie and Patisseries. πŸ˜‹

  15. Had the same problem with my own motorhome. Sometimes it would not start and then it would start everytime but we could never be sure what would happen when I turned the key.
It turned out to be a starter and an alternator combined problem, by replacing both it solved the issue

  16. Don't know if anybody said this yet but American trucks Chevy and Ford if you go under there and hit the starter a couple times with a hammer not to break it just give it a couple of good wax and then usually works it's works since my 1994 Chevy pickup
