I'm looking at fat bikes and was wondering about a 26" SALSA MUKLUK from Craigslist. it says it has a 21" frame, I'm 5'11", is that the right size for me?, there is also a Fatback on Facebook but the ad doesn't really have much of a description.

any experience or recommendations with either of these, or something else?

I will probably be mostly riding gravel and trails

  1. Just wondering why you want a fatbike for mostly gravel and trails. These bikes are heavy and slow compared to skinnier tired bicycles. Perfectly suited to soft terrain like sand, loose gravel, and snow.

To your question, both of these were decent bikes, but appear to be older models. The fatback looks like a good fit for a taller person such as yourself. The Salsa is a bit of a puzzle as I don’t know how the seller is measuring the bike. A 21” seat tube indicates a larger frame, suitable for you. But a 21” top tube is a tiny bike, way too small for you.

Best advice here, is go look at both of them, try them both out and see if one feels better to you. Don’t buy the first bike you look at. Maybe go to a bike shop and look at bikes. They will tell you what size you should be looking for (large I think). Hope this helps.
