Hi! Just had my handlebar converted. The adapter is broken. The mechanic said “perfectly safe to ride, that does not need to be replaced for any functional reason unless you feel like you want to”.
It is safe if the adapter cracked after tightening, but it won’t be safe if you need to untighten the stem.

Unless this is some kind of cosmetic cover for a spacer, this is not safe at all. Riding it will but strain on the steerer and you risk failure at a critical juncture.

The mechanic overtightened things and is covering his ass telling you it’s fine.
That is not fine. You need a new bottom spacer/headset cover there. Otherwise your steer tube will rattle around and your steering will be, ahem, ERRATIC. It will also damage multiple parts quickly.
Go to a different mechanic (or the same one’s supervisor)

I would not ride that. It’s not worth your life.

Ask him to confirm by email. I wouldn’t take the risk and buy new one

Grab the front brake and push and pull the bars backwards and forwards hard, put your finger on the gap, does it move? If so then it’s basically like riding with a loose headset. It won’t kill you immediately, but depending on how loose, it will gradually cause permanent damage to the steerer.
Either way, it looks bad and they need to replace it.

some adapters act as spacers, others don’t. hold your front brake and move your bike back and forth. if your fork wobbles, your adapter would also be a spacer and riding the bike would not be safe at all. if it does not wobble, the adapter is purely cosmetic and you can ride your bike without issues.

Did the mechanic break it?
If so, then he needs to replace it whether it’s safe or not.

even if it’s cosmetic, it’ll let water and gunk in. 100% replace

Trust your mechanic before you trust random people online. Most people commenting probably are talking out of their ass.

This headset cap works under compression. My guess is that the mechanic split it in order to avoid deconnecting the brake lines from the levers.
(It is stupid design really. They make the spacers so you can split them, but the headset cap cannot be split)
I’ve done this myself with my bike. And covered the gap with tape.
No necessarily dangerous. But I wouldn’t accept it from a professional.

maybe you should find out if that many spacers is allright with Cervelo to, that looks like a lot, if you need that many spacers, you have bought the wrong bike.
