I bought this bike second hand but noticed there’s lateral play in the cranks. I tried tightening the nut on the non-drive side, but it didn’t fix it. There also seems to be a bit more movement than just side-to-side.
I’m wondering: is this something that could be solved with a spacer adjustment, or does it point to worn bearings or a bigger issue?

The nut generally only holds the crank arm onto the spindle. When you say “There also seems to be a bit more movement than just side-to-side”… do you mean there is rotational play?
Most likely issues with bottom bracket so yes, worn bearings. BBs are a bit of a mess of different standards, tooling etc and I can’t give you general advice having only sampled some of the many options that I’ve run into on my own bikes.
