This is my STATE 4130 All-Road set up in road-mode. After a few years off my 2000 LeMond Zurich and on two different used carbon road bikes (2010 Giant TCR with Dura Ace 7800 and 2016 Scott Addict with full 105 R7000) I’ve decided that steel really is real. I started looking at custom steel frames and then stopped because they are as expensive as carbon bikes, if not more expensive now. Instead I decided to transform my gravel bike because it already has thru axles and disc brakes. This is my “custom bike levels of bling but with a kind of cheaper mass produced steal frame instead” build.
At SBC’s recommendation I replaced the bottom headset assembly with a used Cane Creek 40 EC44/40 bottom assembly to fit the SBC black label fork that I got for free. I purchased both the 100m ENVE Stem and 40cm 3T Aeroflux bars used on ebay. The bars are finished in Fizik Vento Tacky Microtex bar tape. The Shimano Ultegra C60’s are new, as are the Ultegra rotors, and the freehub sounds like a bike and not a machine gun. The Tubeless GP 5000s inspire a lot of confidence at 32mm and at 50psi it feels amazing. I can hardly believe I used to ride around on 23mm tires with butyl tubes. The Paul Klampers, Sala Guide seatpost, Bontrager Aeolous saddle, GRX derailleur, garbaruk cage/pulley wheels, and the 105 r7000 brifters remain from the original build. The 11-40 CS-M8000 XT 11 speed cassette is oldish while the 48t Rotor chainring is new. The gravel build has the 11-50t garbaruk cassette and a 30t chainring and is hilarious.
So far I love this build. I’m also impressed at how versatile this frame really is because with a steel fork, 650b’s and a lot more stack it feels like a slug but now it feels like an absolute rocket. It’s definitely more smooth than a carbon bike and I’m not sure I need a double chain ring. Although to be honest my chain line leaves a lot to be desired. All in all it’s been worth it.
