Hello so I’ve been getting into biking the past few months and I usually just rent a city bike but I’m considering finally getting one for myself
My dad said he has this one sitting around but I can’t decide if I should take it or just get one more for my needs?
I ride most on the city roads, bike lanes, and sometimes but rarely the C&O canal which is dirt and gravel. But 90% of the time I use a bike a few times a week riding anywhere from 5-20 miles each time
Can you help me identify what type of bike this is and if I should get it or get a different type that would be better suited for me

It’s a Sears bike, Free Spirit was their brand, it’ll get you from point a to b but if you are going to bike a lot I would recommend a more modern bike with 700cc wheels. Like a Trek FX or something.
Hi! The modern equivalent would be a hybrid bike. Every major brand sells hybrid bikes. This particular bike has a “step through” frame, i.e. the top tube is lowered.
It’s a hybrid, but a very cheap one. Since it’s free, then yeah, ride it a bit. But I would do minimal maintenance or modifications because if you are frequently doing 20- mile rides, you’ll want something better before long.
