If you’re considering moving to France, you might be wondering if Grenoble is the right destination for you, so I traveled to the “Capital of the Alps” to see what living there is truly like! While it frequently tops global quality of life rankings, I also dug into the city’s major drawbacks, including its concerning crime rates and air quality issues, to give you an honest look at the pros and cons of everyday life here. Whether you’re planning a scouting trip or just curious about expat life in a top-tier French city, join me as we uncover the truth about Grenoble and find out if it is actually the perfect place to call home.

  1. Thanks for watching! For those who have been there, did Grenoble's crime stats match your reality, or did the mountain views and world-class bike lanes win you over?

  2. Grenoble has a really bad reputation for motorcycle theft here in the U.K, we avoid it at all cost when travelling through the region, not sure if its due to its proximity to the Alps and shipping stolen bikes out but just thought you might have better information living in France? It's a pity as we love how on 3 sides you climb up to either the Vercors, the Alps or the Régional de Chartreuse to the north and would be an ideal location for us otherwise.

  3. J'adore Grenoble !
My kid has lived in Grenoble with her French husband for 9 years, and I've visited a dozen times. I do hope you return for a little longer, as the weather can change frequently, even hourly. It's an awesome place when the sun is shining, and the mountains are magnificent, offering incredible hikes and views.
I can also attest to the public transportation and bike-ability, and I've hoofed it a lot as well- I don't know why it would be rated low for pedestrians.
As for the crime, I know of very little outright violence. The drug trade is responsible for the crime rate, but it's quite possible to live there and never be aware that it's a problem. My wife and daughter feel safe walking after dark to the mall or the supermarket, and we are not afraid for our grandchildren who are growing up there.

  4. I went to school in Grenoble long ago at one of the universities which has been renamed multiple times since. I never got the impression that it was unsafe. I went everywhere and can't say that I encountered anyone shady. I can see the comparison with Lyon; I've been there too. The prominent cliff alongside a river in both places should have reminded me. Speaking of sporty, I still have a North Face parka I bought there. It's a little too small nowadays, but I can't part with it. I appreciate you making the video! I look forward to 20k subscribers for you.

  5. Gotta consider how much poorer Grenoble (and much of France more generally is) relative to other options though for quality of life. Median pre-tax/transfer salaries in Grenoble are like EUR38k a year and post-tax/transfer that's like EUR27k a year. You'd earn double that managing a McDonalds in Mississippi (the poorest state in the US).

  6. I live in Colorado, but potentially considering Grenoble as a retirement option because of the outdoor opportunities. It's definitely high on the list of the places to visit. I was confused about the crime stats as well. Thanks for the video!

  7. Désolé pour le mauvais temps. I visited Grenoble for five days in 2021 with a friend and had a great time. We wandered on both banks of the Isère from as far northwest as a tromp around the exurban charms of Narbonne at the base of the Chartreuse to as far southeast as the Parc Paul Mistral where some of the Olympic events were held in 1968. We mostly walked but used the tramway when pressed for time. Both of us are on the older side of middle age and never felt unsafe day or night.

Like many of France's bigger regional cities, Grenoble has a first rate fine arts museum with works by Zurburan in the 17th century to Fernand Léger in the 20th, to cite just two examples. But don't miss the Musée Dauphinois–worth visiting just for the building, the garden and the great views from the hillside of the right bank of the Isère.
